From Foundational Sounds to Confident Reading
Course Overview
The isiXhosa Phonics & Literacy Programme is a structured, developmentally aligned course designed to help learners build strong reading, spelling, and pronunciation skills in isiXhosa.
This programme supports:
• Home-language learners
• Additional-language learners
• Beginners to intermediate readers
Through systematic phonics instruction rooted in the sound structure of isiXhosa, learners develop both technical accuracy and linguistic confidence.
Programme Objectives
By the end of the programme, learners will:
• Recognise and pronounce all isiXhosa phonemes accurately
• Understand click consonants and their articulation
• Blend syllables fluently
• Decode unfamiliar words
• Spell correctly using isiXhosa orthography
• Read with rhythm, confidence, and comprehension
• Appreciate the musicality and structure of the language
Programme Levels
The course is divided into two progressive levels:
Level 1: Foundational Sound Awareness (Beginners)
Focus: Listening & Sound Recognition
Learners will:
• Identify vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u)
• Recognise consonant sounds
• Develop clear articulation
• Learn syllable patterns (CV structure – e.g., ma, ba, sa)
• Practice basic blending
Special emphasis:
• Introduction to click sounds (c, x, q)
• Hearing and distinguishing clicks
Outcome: Learners confidently pronounce and read simple syllables and basic words.
Level 2: Click Mastery & Syllable Fluency
Focus: Reading Simple Words
Learners will:
• Master dental (c), lateral (x), and alveolar (q) clicks
• Read multi-syllable words
• Understand common consonant clusters (hl, dl, th, bh, etc.)
• Develop fluency in common vocabulary
• Begin writing simple words and phrases
Outcome: Learners read short sentences with improved clarity and rhythm.
Parent Involvement
We encourage parents to:
• Practice daily reading aloud
• Engage in storytelling
• Encourage clear pronunciation
• Create a language-rich environment
Even 10–15 minutes per day significantly improves fluency.
